It’s Thursday, Oppo, and time to pause and think about what could have been.

I’d like to imagine those back seats with glass overtop, like the old Sky View railroad lounges. How awesome would that be?

I think if I’d managed to save up crazy money for retirement the first thing I’d do would be to take the trains  coast to coast for a few months. Such a great way to travel if you can afford a sleeper car.

Looks nice to me, though like other flying wing/BWB designs you are left with a bunch of shitty middle seats and few windows in coach.

The Fallout video game series has a design of jetliner that appears across the various wastelands which is heavily influenced by the Northrop concepts. As you’d expect, since the games are exercises in retrofuturism.

Complete, the plane features an out-of-place larger central fuselage that wouldn’t really have worked , but the wrecks highlight wide seating areas almost similar to a train station within the wing roots - taking the possibilities a flying wing allows to an extreme .

A couple observations on the flying wing.  Where does the pilot sit? And given the number of seats this will be relegated to regional carrier duties!

I want the General Aviation version which is also submersible!

For those not in the know - it’s the flying sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. I had the model when I was a kid.

Isn’t Airbus floating a “Lifting Body” design concept these days?

I always thought the concept of an open, spacious interior might mean more leg room and more space to stretch out. But, as my aviation buddy once pointed out, it probably means having your legs resting on freight, mail bags and crates of chickens... given how the airlines would likely want to use the open space.

Yes

Not by the standards of the time, it only sat 1 less passenger than the L-649 Constellation, 80 seats was pretty big in the late ‘40s. Air travel was an expensive luxury for the few who could afford it, and also cared about speed enough to sacrifice some creature comforts and personal space.

Airliner designs were interesting when the designers' only frames of reference for long distance travel were trains and ocean liners. But, of course you need a cocktail bar and an observation lounge, you're traveling across the ocean, not taking the bus to the corner store for cigarettes.

That’s pretty cool. Never played any of those games though. Lego Star Wars is about as far as I ever progressed.

I think I’d rather look at the ground from a plane.

I don’t fly often but the few times I do I’m starting out the window.

Exactly. A vivid example of this is the Bristol Brabazon:

Kinja'd!!!

The thing was about the size of a 767 but still only held 100 passengers.

To meet these varied requirements, the Type 167 specified a huge 25 ft (8 m)-diameter fuselage, which is about 5 ft (1.5 m) greater than a 747, with full-length upper and lower decks. This enclosed sleeping berths for 80 passengers, a dining room, 37-seat cinema, promenade and bar; or alternatively an arrangement of day seats for 150 people. At one point, the Committee recommended the adoption of a narrower fuselage that was intended to house a total of 50 passengers; the British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC) agreed with this recommendation, and also expressed its preference for a design accommodating only 25 passengers. In August 1943,  an agreement reached with the airline led to the selection of an interior layout which contained a forward area housing six compartments, each one for six passengers, along with a seventh compartment for just three passengers; a midsection above the wing – the wing was 6 feet deep at that point – which accommodated 38 seats arranged around tables in groups of four along with a pantry and galley ; and a rear area populated by 23 seats within an aft-facing cinema, complete with a cocktail bar and lounge. I rode the train for the first time in probably 40 years last December from NYC to Norfolk, VA with my dad. We got seats in business class, and it was really pretty nice. Wifi was shitty, so I had to use  my phone, but it had power, tons of legroom, a big window, and was relatively smooth and quiet.

At least Boeing’s a sure bet on the 797.

Ah, don’t worry....  American and Delta will have lots of “Social Distancing” markers and placards in the jetway, so I’m sure this will be ultra-safe.  Because the airlines care about me.

Ever since the JL Wrangler was unveiled and I discovered there’s a dealership in western VA that will allow you to order from the factory at 5% below invoice, I’ve wanted to pull the trigger and use Amtrak to take a nice trip to Virginia to pick it up. There’s a regularly scheduled route straight from Indianapolis to that area.

Alas, COVID. And money.
